A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab was another October COYER book club selection. It is also another book that has been in my TBR for awhile. It is also a book that I’ve avoided due to the devotion for and the hype that surrounds the series.
I think Schwab did a fantastic job with parallel universes without making it too difficult to follow. I liked that the magic made sense. There were rules to their magic and limitations. Those rules weren’t hard to keep straight either. It did start off kind of slow as the world needed to be established. Once everything was established events really started rolling. There always seemed to be something just outside of the scope of the story to keep me hooked.
I really liked Kell and Lila. I thought they clashed just enough to keep things interesting but they weren’t annoying. I have thoughts where Lila is concerned. I also really enjoyed the secondary characters surrounding both Kell and Lila. The Grey London barkeep particularly pulled on my heartstrings. There really weren’t a lot of extraneous characters and I think that works because there’s so much going on in the plot.
I’m glad I finally read A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab. I plan on continuing the series some time in the New Year.
