I picked up The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller because it was picked for me by Alexa. Lex and I have pretty similar reading tastes and yet I still was a little skeptical going in. Lex has never steered me wrong but The Shadows Between Us was one of her favorites and she hasn’t had many of those recently so it set the bar kind of high. It is a true fact that high praise of a book makes me edgy. It’s why I put off reading Harry Potter until it was thrust at me. I have my uncle to thank for that.
I should have trusted my gut reaction. The Shadows Between Us opened with one hell of a first line! You can download a sample from Kindle but be ready to want to fork over your money for this one. (You’ve been warned.) I really felt like this book had everything I didn’t know I was looking for which also makes it hard to classify. There was much discussion about this between Lex and I. The Shadows Between Us reads like a new adult historical romance with a mystery and paranormal aspects. Not only that but for awhile I wasn’t sure if I even liked Alessandra or not. I did warm up to her and realized she’s just a girl who very much understands her wants and goals.
Then there is The Shadow King. He is shrouded (literally) in shadows. He rules a kingdom that is conquering neighboring kingdoms. On top of that, he is trying to find answers to several questions he has. I am here to tell you he was not ready for someone like Alessandra. And I was not ready for some of those answers!
The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller was fast paced and highly enjoyable. It was a perfect read because it was such a different setting from our current crisis. To be fair though I think this would be *just* as enjoyable outside of a pandemic. I cannot recommend this book enough!
