Welcome to the City of Sin, where casino families reign, gangs infest the streets…and secrets hide in every shadow.
Enne Salta was raised as a proper young lady, and no lady would willingly visit New Reynes, the so-called City of Sin. But when her mother goes missing, Enne must leave her finishing school—and her reputation—behind to follow her mother’s trail to the city where no one survives uncorrupted.
Frightened and alone, Enne has only one lead: the name Levi Glaisyer. Unfortunately, Levi is not the gentleman she expected—he’s a street lord and a con man. Levi is also only one payment away from cleaning up a rapidly unraveling investment scam, so he doesn't have time to investigate a woman leading a dangerous double life. Enne's offer of compensation, however, could be the solution to all his problems.
Their search for clues leads them through glamorous casinos, illicit cabarets and into the clutches of a ruthless Mafia donna. As Enne unearths an impossible secret about her past, Levi's enemies catch up to them, ensnaring him in a vicious execution game where the players always lose. To save him, Enne will need to surrender herself to the city…
And she’ll need to play.
Right when I started this book I was very excited because I have heard such great things about Foody’s writing and her books.
This one starts off with a great mystery. A girl, Enne, from a nice little country travels to a run down hole in the wall type of place with crime, threats, corruption, and intrigue in order to find her missing mother. Upon being there for only a short period of time she is in way over her head when she seeks out a street lord by the name of Levi. Levi and his gang know that Enne is new to town and they at first treat her as a pawn on the game board and act like she can not take care of herself.
Slowly as the book goes on we start to learn that Enne is stronger than the street gangs believe and she starts to have her own personality, which I highly enjoyed. There were times when she was a little wishy washy on certain things but she is new to the area so I think at times she was just letting her fear show more than other times when she seemed to have an iron will. I also like how Levi grew to be more accepting of things as time went on but I still think there is more to his character than what we were able to see in this book. I think he was really strong near the end and I can’t wait to see what he does in the sequel.
Overall, this book is atmospheric with a darker gambling town where gangs and crime mafia rule the world. You have to be careful in this world because you never know who is out to do what and who is owned by which gang or mafia. I did like the setting and the characters in this one but I feel that Foody has a little more to give us so this did not get my highest rating but I’m really excited to see where the world and characters go.
