A scorching forbidden love threatens to tear a rift through the Black Dagger Brotherhood in J. R. Ward’s newest novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series.

Xcor, leader of the Band of Bastards, convicted of treason against the Blind King, is facing a brutal interrogation and torturous death at the hands of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Yet after a life marked by cruelty and evil deeds, he accepts his soldier’s fate, his sole regret the loss of a sacred female who was never his: the Chosen Layla.

Layla alone knows the truth that will save Xcor’s life. But revealing his sacrifice and his hidden heritage will expose them both and destroy everything Layla holds dear—even her role of mother to her precious young. Torn between love and loyalty, she must summon the courage to stand up against the only family she has for the only man she will ever love. Yet even if Xcor is somehow granted a reprieve, he and Layla would have to confront a graver challenge: bridging the chasm that divides their worlds without paving the way for a future of even greater war, desolation, and death.

As a dangerous old enemy returns to Caldwell, and the identity of a new deity is revealed, nothing is certain or safe in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, not even true love . . . or destinies that have long seemed set in stone.

4 Stars

I have been a long time reader of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I have been through the ups and downs of this series. I do believe the series has gotten a little bit ridiculous at this point and I’m not sure how much more Ward can milk from this cash cow but something always brings me back. I just love the characters and the drama so I keep reading. This series is just one I feel I can’t let go of.

I will ultimately keep this review on the shorter side because I do not want to spoil too much since this is book 15 in a series!

I wanted to see more of Layla and Xcor and their relationship so I dived head first into this one. I have to say that I did like the way Ward handled their relationship. It felt like there was real struggle there and how far Xcor was willing to go was really sweet. The romance between the two was bittersweet as there was several times were I was not sure if they would make it as a couple with all of the odds stacked against them.

As far as the rest of the book I was happy to see Qhuinn and Blay again but I did feel that Qhuinn took it a little too far, but that has always been his style. I was happy to see the two working through issues as a couple and as parents. I did feel it was a bit over the top and dramatic but it can still work for the series.

The one piece I was not happy about was V! I can’t believe the things he was thinking in this book and I’m really worried about where his story is going. I know that Ward always has issues with writing his story so I’m concerned because he is my favorite brother. I’m really upset about what he is doing in this book and I hope it works out in the next novel.

Overall, this was just another installment in the BDB series. It wasn’t my favorite but it also wasn’t my least favorite. I stick around because I am in love with the characters. The drama has gotten over the top in recent books but sometimes you need an escape. I do wish there was more information about what might be coming up on the side of the action though. There was once so much action in this series and it has died out in recent books to be filled with drama and romance. I miss the action Ward!!
