There is no way I wasn’t going to like How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather. A book about Salem Massachusetts; a book about the Salem Witch trials but set in today’s world; a book written by a descendant of a very prominent person of the Witch Trials? Yes to all of the above. How to Hang a Witch was exactly what I needed to be reading around Halloween and it was SO worth it.
The great thing about How to Hang a Witch are the characters. You have this new girl in town who knows that quite a lot of people hate her ancestor and his role in the Witch Trials. Some of those people are direct descendants from the women accused of being witches. This plays a very significant part in the book. I loved Sam’s neighbors and how the people in town acted around Sam. It wasn’t always nice.
The amazing thing about How to Hang a Witch is the one thing that I can’t really tell you about. Basically I feel like Adriana Mather is very good at distracting. I feel like the whole time I was watching her left hand and she smacked me with the right in the best literary way possible. I had a suspicion about what was going on and who might be involved but I was never sure.
The only gripe that I have with the book is that I didn’t care for the love triangle in this book at all. I struggle with this type of love interest no matter what genre I come across it in and it just didn’t work for me. It was one of the big reasons I held off on a full 5 stars. I immediately devoured the next book in the series and will buy whatever Adriana Mather puts out next!
