I knew in March I’d most likely be meeting Ellen Hopkins. I’d read both Burned and Smoke and I wanted to read at least one more book by her before then. I picked Impulse by Ellen Hopkins off my shelf.
Ellen Hopkins’s books are always fast paced reads. That doesn’t mean they’re easy. Hopkins creates people from ink and paper and makes me care about them as if they are flesh and blood. Impulse was no different. The plot kept my attention throughout the book and I was rooting on the characters. Each has tried to take their life and now they are in therapy to heal. I couldn’t help but wish that they would all succeed and be able to move on in their lives.
I enjoyed the characters for the most part. I really liked Tony and Conner. I think it was their wry sense of humor. It always endears me to a character. I didn’t enjoy Vanessa as much. She just seemed to be there. I couldn’t connect. There’s also one thing that kind of bewildered me and if you’ve read Impulse you most likely know what I’m talking about. If you need a reminder in involves two of the three characters.
I didn’t cry. Sure I teared up with them and my heart hurt but it didn’t shock me the way that Smoke and Burned did. I felt like I was just expecting the ending to happen and because of that it wasn’t as emotional for me. I’ll definitely continue to work through her back list.
