[book-info]

I picked up a copy of Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff at ALA Mid-Winter 2015. These ARCs were black and red and stated the title neatly across the cover. Truly it wouldn’t have caught my eye but it did catch my husband’s. He isn’t a big reader so I instantly wanted to know what it was about. I could tell right away that it would at the very least be an interesting read.

I’m not much of a science fiction fan so I was hesitant when I picked Illuminae up. This book had also received some heavy hype. This is a case where I shouldn’t have worried about either. It took me some time to really understand the book. There are different types of medium used to tell the story of Illuminae. There are different types of reports (some with redacted information), art generated using computers, different imagery, I could keep going but I think you get the idea.

Illuminae revolves around Kady. She is a kick ass protagonist and I loved rooting for her. Kady takes no shit from anyone but she has a strong moral code. She was a refreshing main character!

I can’t begin to tell you how beautiful and unique Illuminae is. Despite the hype, I wasn’t expecting much. I was blown away. It is a unique way to tell a story but even more than that the story is moving and left me wanting to quickly find out what happens next! I would suggest reading a physical copy of Illuminae despite being a hard core ereader girl.
