The legacy of the Black Dagger Brotherhood continues in a spin-off series from the #1 New York Times bestselling author…
Paradise, blooded daughter of the king’s First Advisor, is ready to break free from the restrictive life of an aristocratic female. Her strategy? Join the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s training center program and learn to fight for herself, think for herself…be herself. It’s a good plan, until everything goes wrong. The schooling is unfathomably difficult, the other recruits feel more like enemies than allies, and it’s very clear that the Brother in charge, Butch O’Neal, a.k.a. the Dhestroyer, is having serious problems in his own life.
And that’s before she falls in love with a fellow classmate. Craeg, a common civilian, is nothing her father would ever want for her, but everything she could ask for in a male. As an act of violence threatens to tear apart the entire program, and the erotic pull between them grows irresistible, Paradise is tested in ways she never anticipated—and left wondering whether she’s strong enough to claim her own power…on the field, and off.
I read this book back in the beginning of the year and I have no idea why I decided to put off reviewing it for so long.
I love Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood Series which this book is a spin-off of. However, I have felt that in recent years the BDB series has been going down in quality compared to the older books about the original brothers. So I was scared to dive into this new series thinking that it wouldn’t hold that fresh feeling I had when I originally started BDB years ago. I’m happy so say that this book felt like the return of great Ward writing once again.
I loved how this book started right off the bat with a big action sequence because it really grabs your attention and makes you wonder as to what is going to happen and how far the Brothers are going to go in order to find their newest members to the Lesser war. I highly enjoyed that Paradise was so driven to make it through this first task and that she wasn’t willing to ever sit down and give up, she is all in. Of course I also highly enjoyed seeing Craeg again because he just seems mysterious and dark.
Watching these two fight their attraction from early one was a huge step in the right direction for Ward and this series. She managed to bring back the spark of passion in a new way with younger characters. I have to say there were some scenes where my jaw was on the floor because I just loved the heat that Ward was bringing, it felt like the old days with her books, the days where I was head over heels for anything she wrote.
Paradise never bothered me, which was pleasantly surprising considering I was expecting the worst from a girly girl like her who was born into the right blood line. I also really enjoyed that Craeg was more than just mysterious, he was deep. He knew how he felt and how his body reacted to Paradise and yet he was always trying to do right by her. He does worship the ground she walks on which is exactly how male vamps in this series are suppose to act.
Overall, I just loved everything about this book. The action, romance, passion, and exciting new characters bring life to something that was starting to be a bit stale. I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series and with this whole new group. Bring it on Ward!
