I was recently over at On a Book Bender and came across Beth’s review of Columbine by Dave Cullen. I immediately set aside the other books I was reading and borrowed this one from the library.
I was a 14 year old eighth grader on April 20, 1999. I grew up in a small town and was so naïve it’s almost embarrassing. I recall being very confused over the Columbine tragedy. I knew it was bad but couldn’t understand why. Little did I know that I wasn’t alone with that struggle.
I picked up Columbine to learn now what I couldn’t understand then. Dave Cullen does an excellent job of compiling all of the information available. His notes and sources are well documented. I learned quite a bit and some of my information was corrected. I was horrified to learn that Eric and Dylan had wanted so much worse to happen. I also learned that the FBI Crisis Negotiator for Waco and the Oklahoma City Bombin had a child in Columbine High School during the shooting.
I can’t recommend this book enough for people who want to know more about what happened before, during, and after the tragedy at Columbine High School. I had a hard time putting it down. I think it’s important to know about the events from our past and learn what we can.
