4 Stars

The year I read the first Mara Dyer book I admit I wasn’t taken with most of the book but the ending just gutted me and left me screaming. I was on the phone with my boyfriend for over an hour just going through this whole range of emotions. The second book brought a different environment but not many answers so I knew this third book was going to have to bring about all of those answers we have all been waiting for.

The instant this book starts you just feel this rage as a reader! You know what is happening to Mara and everyone else in the facility and you can’t help but wonder how on earth a person can treat another person in this way. It makes you appreciate the fact that most medical research can not be performed on humans until it reaches a certain point in the research trials. What Mara was put through was just beyond comprehension and it made the book have this delicious dark and evil feel to it. You could just image yourself in this facility with Mara and all of the retribution she was going to have to exact in this book to make everything feel even. I feel like Hodkin finally really let Mara have full control of her dark powers in this book. You could see how much Mara had grown and how far she was willing to go.

While Mara is this dark force in this book I have to say I still love Jamie and I was so happy to see more of him finally! I love him to pieces and he is the type of best friend I wish I had. He is in the story as support but also to provide all of that comic relief that we love him for. There were several lines in this book that were just so well delivered I couldn’t help but closing the book to just all out laugh at what he had said. He also adds a lot of pop culture references to the book which if you get the references you will smile. I LOVE JAMIE!!

Moving past the characters in this book I feel that Hodkin did a good job with her story arc in this book. There were a lot of answers that came to be. We were finally able to understand where their powers came from and how they were to use them. We get the timeline and how it all relates to each other and why they exist. However, for me there were still a few things that I feel were left hanging in the open. There were some storylines introduced with the professor that never really reached an ending and I felt that Mara didn’t quite get all the retribution that she wanted. Don’t get me wrong I loved the ending of the book because it was a romance ending but it wasn’t really an ending to the action side of the story. I feel there could have been more of an ending but like all stories we know that the characters will continue on their paths and they will do what they have to do to stay alive and survive the world being different from it.

Overall, I was happy with most of the answers and with the romance points but the action plot points could have ended better. Plus I felt like I went through this book like we all did with New Moon, waiting and waiting for my main man to step back onto the page. I missed Noah.

Really wish I could read your review, but I have yet to read the second book. I didn’t like the first book as much as everyone around me seemed to. I guess my expectations were much to high, considering how much people ranted about how “scary” this book was.

I do still plan on reading the second and third book, but won’t go in, with these sky high expectations.

i love your new blog! love the colors and the design. 🙂

i didn’t read your review of retribution because i haven’t started the series yet (even though i have all the books–i’m hoping to marathon this series this coming winter break) but seeing that you’re giving it 4 stars i’m guessing it’s a pretty good conclusion overall. i heard so many gushing about noah; i’m excited reading him most of all.

Great review sweetie! I had so many emotions after finishing the first book, too! Too bad my husband doesn’t really get this whole “reading YA” thing, I wouldn’t be able to force him to listen to my raves even if I’d tie him down!

I agree with every point you made! I love Jamie, too (Taste the rainbow, b*tch!). I actually loved the ending, the more I think about it, the more perfect it seems. I just wish there was more.. can’t believe I have to part with this story u_u
