For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.

If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked - surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.

There's only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered, the same one that got her killed, and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that's not her own, she must decide which path to choose and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she's only beginning to understand. - via GoodReads

4 Stars

Pawn by Aimee Carter is a dystopian young adult novel set in Washington D.C. I will admit that I primarily read Pawn because I liked the cover. The synopsis drew me in further. Plus I had read and enjoyed a few of Carter’s Goddess Test novels.

I really liked Kitty Doe. I may not be able to identify with her situation but she is a strong character. Kitty’s life will forever be determined by the number on the back of her neck. When given the opportunity to change those circumstances she does so after weighting the pros and cons carefully. Even if she doesn’t really have a choice, she still looks at all the angles to make sure it’s the choice she needs to make. When Kitty’s life is turned upside down, she stays true to herself and isn’t afraid to defend or stick up for herself.

I enjoyed Carter’s world building in Pawn. I fairly sped through the book, needing to know what happened. I am truly looking forward to the next installment of The Blackcoat Rebellion!
