Discussion: My Dirty Little Secret

I like nice books and I cannot lie
you other bloggers can’t deny
that when a book comes in with a little bit a wear
and a spine that has been creased
you get wrung; want to pull out stuff
’cause you noticed that book was rough
deep in the book repairin’
I’m pissed and I can’t stop swearin’
Oh baby I’m gonna fix ya and remove ya sticker
brittle in the middle but you give much back
brittle in the middle but you give much back

inspired by a hate of abused books and my mind’s incessant repeat of Baby Got Back by Sir Mix-a-Lot

That used to be me until I learned something important about myself: I don’t re-read many books so there is no point in me keeping them. Ergo, for me the story is far more important to me than the condition of a book I’ll use and then send on. That’s not to say I have no standards; just that it doesn’t have to be pristine.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

To me a well worn (not abused) book is like a child’s favorite stuffed animal. The wounds and scars are evidence of being picked up enough to earn them. To me it’s a mark of love. Needless to say in this aspect of my reading life I have definitely loosened the reins. πŸ™‚

Do your books have to be in new condition? Do you too love a well worn book?

They do not have to be brand new. As long as they do not look too bad I do not mind. I can’t stand torn covers, when they are super discolored, or have major water damage. Only gently used I guess.

I’m with you on that one. I don’t mind used but that doesn’t mean I’ll take garbage either. πŸ™‚ Water damage is a no go and while I don’t like rips small ones are ok.

The library was probably my best friend growing up and probably where my tolerance comes from. I also worked in our library for a few years. The worst ones come back smelling like smoke or cat pee. πŸ™

However for the most part our library system is awesome and as long as the books are bound still I’m able to roll with it. πŸ˜€

half.com is like my crack. I’ve used certain sellers to know that their good is my very good. I’m proud of myself though because I haven’t purchased a book since 5/29 and I have been very sorely tempted!

I’m careful with my books too. I’m just not as militant as I used to be. πŸ™‚ I take off the dust jackets because they’re so awkward to try and hold onto and read at the same time!

Thanks! The original post title was I Like Worn Books but every time I said it in my mind, I would automatically tack on and I cannot lie. Then it was just easier to rhyme about nice books. I entertained myself for about 15 minutes. Lol
