Summary from Goodreads:
This is the story before everything..
Elizabeth knows what’s expected of her, perfection. She’s the daughter of an Earl and expected to marry well, say and do the right things with a smile on her face when inside she’s dying for a chance to escape. Thanks to an inheritance her godmother left her years ago, her chance will come with her next birthday. Her hopes of escape abruptly end when Robert, her childhood nemesis that she hasn’t seen in over fourteen years, comes back into her life and does everything he can to drive her out of her mind even as he steals her heart.
He hated her.
At least, he tried to hate her, but it was so damn difficult to hate someone that he couldn’t live without. He tried to ignore her, tried to focus on anything but her, but nothing worked. Somehow she made her way into his heart and started to make him want things that he never though possible, made him smile and laugh even while she drove him out of his mind and started a legacy by turning him into…..
BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR!!! I am so taken with Truce that I can’t even think straight at the moment! I will be the first to admit that I absolutely loathe historical romances. I just can’t seem to ever get into them. Until…. TRUCE! This book had everything I needed and much, much more. From the beginning page “About this book…” and the Truce Glossary, the Prologue, and onto the Epilogue my heart will never be the same. Cover to cover, you will be whisked away to a time when things were so very different, yet somehow the same and you’ll forever be a changed person for reading it. Like I said before, I don’t read historicals, but this book is the prequel to all the previous Neighbor From Hell books and it shows you how those luscious Bradford boys came to be. The theme of the book is not necessarily dark in subject matter in today’s day and age, but for the ninetieth century, well, it would definitely be classified as dark. Even scandalous!
Robert, a.k.a. “Robert Lemonade,” was such an insufferable and unbearable little boy. He made Elizabeth’s life a living hell. As a man, he really didn’t change all that much, however, his appearance, well, holy hotness!! He grew into this attractive young man and became the most honorable figure in his family. He can be my “spare” any day of the week. Our beautiful Elizabeth was just that, beautiful, inside and out. What a generous heart she had. She never put anyone ahead of her needs and she was always portrayed the “good girl.” She’s very clever and tremendously good at playing pranks. My kinda gal! The angst, humor, and teasing between these two was so refreshing and made me feel like I was living their lives. My heart broke just as much as theirs did. I found my hands clenching at my sides when Robert’s hands clenched at his sides. I could feel my heart sink the same time I knew Elizabeth’s did. I was so powerfully drawn to both of them, that their lives became my primary concern. Ms. Mathewson had great supporting characters in both sets of parents, Elizabeth’s sisters, Robert’s brother James, and even the servants made me chuckle from time to time.
I believe this is RL Mathewson’s first historical romance and with that said, she knocked it out of the park!! She managed to captivate this old gal who NEVER reads those and she made me fall in love with the story, the characters, and anything and everything that is this book! It will keep you glued to the pages. It will make you feel like your heart was ripped out of your chest and just when you think you can’t take anymore, it will bring down gently and cradle you within it’s warmth. You will most definitely laugh out loud several times and get pissed almost simultaneously.
It’s 291 (Kindle Version) pages long and for my liking, it was perfect. Bravo Ms. Mathewson. You’ve done it again! You’ve managed to turn my world upside down and left me standing on my head!! <3 U!
