This Crumbling Pageant by Patricia Burroughs is one of those books that comes along and you take the time to savor it. I’ll be honest: it took me almost 100 pages to really start to feel the book but by the end I was gripping the book, my eyes flying across the page trying to absorb the book as quickly as I could. I had asked to review this book on a whim and it paid off!
The world-building in This Crumbling Pageant is pretty subtle but it felt familiar. The setting is England and Wales in the early 1800s. There is the Ordinary world that was left behind when a Fury wisely convinced his people to hide themselves away from the Earthborn people. The people who hold power in the Fury Triad are called Fireborns. The powers they can be granted range from prophecy to empathy to mind control. Different portions of the book are set in the Fireborn Realm and in the Earthborn realm. I enjoyed the time spent in both worlds.
The novel is focused on Persephone Fury’s story and man does she have a story! This girl has been through the wringer. Persephone has power that no one knows how to deal with it. The only way her parents know how to deal with her is to drug her with a tea so she doesn’t have any “episodes”. Aside from uncontrollable magic, Persephone is stubborn and thinks that she knows best how to handle any situation thrown at her. At times this made her irritating but at her core Persephone is driven by honor and ensuring that all she knows are protected and justice is served to any who would be dishonorable.
There are so many wonderful characters in this book. I really fell in love with them all, even the bad ones. I didn’t see a plot twist coming and it sort of floored me! There I was reading along and then WHAM! It isn’t easy for that to happen to me anymore. I did end up being correct on one of the plot twists but was completely sideswiped by a big one. I LOVED IT!
This Crumbling Pageant by Patricia Burroughs is an epic fantasy that ran me through the gamut of emotions: love, hate, suspense, apprehension, horror, relief, and wonder. I thoroughly enjoyed this book so much that I can’t wait to get a hold of the second one, as in I want the second one now.
