Sometimes the best man is the one you least expect...

Faith Holland left her hometown after being jilted at the altar. Now a little older and wiser, she's ready to return to the Blue Heron Winery, her family's vineyard, to confront the ghosts of her past, and maybe enjoy a glass of red. After all, there's some great scenery there....

Like Levi Cooper, the local police chief - and best friend of her former fiancé. There's a lot about Levi that Faith never noticed, and it's not just those deep green eyes. The only catch is she's having a hard time forgetting that he helped ruin her wedding all those years ago. If she can find a minute amidst all her family drama to stop and smell the rosé, she just might find a reason to stay at Blue Heron, and finish that walk down the aisle. - via GoodReads

AH! Kristan Higgins!! Hands down this woman has got to be my favorite contemporary author. After I finish a Higgins novel I think “I have just read the best Kristan Higgins novel” and then I read the next one. I haven’t come across a Higgins book that I’ve rated below a four. I realize that I’m fangirling here so I’ll just get to the point and tell you why this book is fantastic and one that should interest you enough to pick it up.

I didn’t really like the characters in The Best Man by Kristan Higgins. At least not until about half way through and then I fell so hard I was a little flabbergasted. In fact I’m pretty sure Higgins went out of her way to show us why both Faith and Levi were the worst possible match in Manningsport, NY. The first three quarters are spent explaining Faith and Levi’s twisted path and how they’ve done nothing but get in the other’s way. I’d say that I was almost desperate for the ending because I had to know just how in the world she was going to make THIS WORK?? Both characters have a lot of baggage that they’re bringing to the table. I wasn’t sure that they would be able to get through it all to get the happily ever after they deserved.

I have to say that the secondary characters are what make Higgins’s books so special for me. She creates such robust worlds that you feel like you can drive to Location, State and actually find these people. It adds so much to the story. The characters in this story…..oh boy! From Faith’s gay ex-fiance, her crazy and loopy family, Levi’s smoking hot ex-wife, and the gold digger trying to steal the family heirlooms, there is pretty much a character for everybody to love.

Of course you can’t review a romance without talking about the romance. If you’re looking for a romance with lots of flowers and sweep you off your feet moments this isn’t your book. In The Best Man the romance is slow to show itself; not just to the reader but to the characters themselves. It is one of those books where both characters are kind of ambivalent about their own romance until it looks like it could pass them by. Watching them figure that part out…..well it really was pretty special.

I’m just going to say that if you haven’t picked up a Kristan Higgins novel yet, what are you waiting for?!?! I’ve enjoyed each one that I’ve picked up and as I stated above each one becomes my new favorite. I can’t wait to see what the next novel brings!

She is a pretty fantastic author. I read my first four star book from her but even at 4 stars I’m going to keep coming back. 🙂
