Summary from Goodreads:
In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue–Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is–she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are–and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, Tris also learns that her secret might help her save the ones she loves . . . or it might destroy her.
I know I know you are all out there saying “Really Alexa you just now read this book!” Well the answer to that is yes I just finally broke down and read this one. I have had it on my shelf for ages but I avoided it because everyone seemed to love this one and I was afraid I was going to be disappointed in it. I’m here to say I was not disappointed.
When I stepped into this world I loved it right away. I wanted to see what faction Beatrice or Tris was going to pick based on her test results. When she chose Dauntless I was so excited to see what that faction was going to be like instead of her grey and boring faction. I wanted to experience this high thrill ride she was on and I got just that. I loved watching Tris grow and change with her time spent in a new faction. I loved how she had to be tough but still had a soft side and that she could grow but also remember where she came from. Oh and when I met Four I didn’t know if I was going to like him but oh dear I love that man. He is everything that Tris needed and he is such an amazing character. I thought Tris was blowing me away with her character growth but Four stepped on the page and I slowly started to fall in love with him. I couldn’t help myself!
I loved how Four was always right there for Tris, not to make her seem weak or incapable of doing things but to help her remember what she can do. He was always there and he helped Tris to realize the powerhouse she really is. There is nothing like a man who doesn’t oppress a strong female lead but helps her be who she really is. I loved Four and I want to know even more about him. I want to see how his relationship with Tris is going to grow and change because I feel the relationship between these two is just getting started and has tons of room to grow. Thank you Roth for making a couple who has to fight for their romance through all the battles and challenges. I like that the romance didn’t overtake the story but was seamless with the rest of the story.
Between the action, fights, death, life, love, hate, romance, and growth it is hard to decide what aspect was my favorite. I liked the world building, it was a huge part of this story yet it never over took the characters story line. While I have been praising this book you would think I’m going to rate it 5 hearts but I’m holding back just a little. This is just under 5 hearts for me for the simple reason that I was waiting for that one thing that would blow me away the one piece of the puzzle that would just awe me. I didn’t have that moment, you readers know what I’m talking about. So here is to the hope that I will have that moment with the second book.
