Title: Full Steam Ahead (Seaswept #1)
Author: Valerie Chase
Publication Date: January 14th 2014
Seven days aboard a luxury cruise.
The perfect getaway from it all.
At least, that’s what Georgia Cantwell is hoping for…
With her inbox filling with menacing emails, Georgia just wants to run away from her shattered life on her sorority’s winter break cruise. What she doesn’t need is green-eyed Jace McLaren seeing through her tacked-on smile and stealing her breath away with each tantalizing kiss.
Growing up with a father in jail, Jace knows from experience that if you’re going through hell, there’s no way out but through. He has always steered away from girls like Georgia with her ice-queen attitude, but she’s in real trouble, and despite himself he pushes past her walls.
As much as Georgia tries to ignore it, Jace won’t let her pretend with him. But she can’t tell him the truth. Her past would ruin his trust, her family, her future—everything.
But out on the open ocean, there’s nowhere to hide. And when Georgia’s secrets come tumbling out, it might take more than Jace to get her through the storm.
Georgia is on break. She is free from school and gets to spend her break on a sunny cruise ship with her sorority sisters. She should be having the time of her life. Instead, Georgia’s family is broke and she could barely scrape up the money to pay for the room she has to share with Jace her ex-boyfriends fraternity brother. She was supposed to be waiting eagerly for her boyfriend to propose on New Year’s Eve fixing many things in her life. Instead, he is now her ex and she has to see him even away from school since his fraternity is part of the trip. She cannot keep anything down and she is hiding a secret that she cannot afford to hide anymore. Add some confusing feelings about the new roommate she cannot stand and you could say Georgia is having the worst vacation ever.
I would like to say I loved Georgia but we just did not fully click. I felt sympathetic about what she was going through but she just was not a character I could totally connect with. If it was not for the fact that something is clearly eating away at her I probably would not have cared to know Georgia. Luckily as a reader you get to dig deeper into who a character is and if you are lucky you get to see them grow. Georgia is having a hard time and has quite a bit to work on with herself so you do get to see Georgia work through her faults and deal with her problems.
Just like in real life you can’t connect with everyone. That was the case with Georgia on her own but when it came to Georgia and Jace I loved them. I am a sucker for characters who claim they don’t like the other when it is obvious they are going to give in sooner or later. That is when you get the banter. Then slowly characters open up and you get those sweet moments as well. It was cute getting to read about Jace worrying about Georgia even when he tried to be indifferent. He’s had a hard past but has a plan for his life. Georgia is the one who has no idea what her future holds and if she would only let him closer Jace could help her figure it out.
Overall, I enjoyed reading Full Steam Ahead. It was sweet and had its funny moments. I was a little indifferent about Georgia but I loved her interactions with Jace. I enjoyed the suspense of having to wait to find out what the secret destroying Georgia’s life was. The secret itself was not what I was expecting and although crazy when it was all exposed and dealt with, it didn’t hit me as hard as I think it could. I did enjoy Georgia’s interactions with her friend Yasmin and I am looking forward to getting to know more about her in the next book of the Sea Swept series.
“Droplets fall from dark brown hair, water trickling everywhere. Across the bridge of his slightly crooked nose. Down his suntanned shoulders and flat stomach. Down, down…my mouth is dry, and I tear my gaze away from the line of towel slug low-too low-on his narrow hips.
Jace Mclaren raises a dark brow at me.
“Hey there, roomie,” he says.
And that’s when I throw up.”
