Summary from Goodreads:

never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.

Suspense, romance, and the paranormal meet in this chilling urban fantasy, the first book in a new series from Kami Garcia, bestselling coauthor of the Beautiful Creatures novels.

My Thoughts:

I have read the first book in the Beautiful Creatures series and I will say that I did enjoy that story. I didn’t all out love it but I was interested to hear that the authors were going to write their own series and I wanted to see how the authors would write without one another. Everyone seemed to have mixed feelings on these authors separating and I wanted to decide for myself.

I have to say when you start out a book with a bunch of spirits that can overtake animals and people and they are not friendly then you add in two hot guys who will spice up the story I call that a good time. I was a little worried about how spooky this book would be because I’m not a huge horror fan but I think this book had just enough of a touch of spookiness. There wasn’t so much that I couldn’t sleep at night but enough to keep you wondering just what these spirits were up to. I have to say the concept for this story is just brilliant! I loved how Garcia was able to slowly over the course of the book put together these little pieces of the puzzle. Over the course of the story the story just grew into something so amazing and complex yet so simple that it all worked. Every piece was so important to the outcome at the end of the book and if any of those pieces were missing the story would not have been the same.

As far as the characters go I connected with some of them and didn’t care much for others. I do have to say I had issues with Kennedy from time to time because she always seemed to want to complain about her situation in life and where she was. She wasn’t really willing to accept the help that was offered to her and she doubted who she was so many times that it became a little much at certain points. I do have to say I did love the two hot guys in the story though. Lukas was so smooth and strong in who he was, he was the good twin. Lukas tried his best to make Kennedy part of the group and to keep the gang moving forward, he is the glue. However who really wants the good boy all the time… Jared is the “bad” twin who has some secrets of his own. He is the quiet one who will keep to himself but has so much heart and so many emotions and knowledge to offer Kennedy and you can just feel the attraction between the two of them. I’m sorry but for me it was never about Lukas, I’m a Jared girl all the way. I know I know we all hate when there is a love triangle but this one seems to work and not be a normal triangle.

Overall, I really loved this book because it will story will have you turning pages faster than you even realize. I always had to know more every single time I put the book down. I wanted the ride and adventure this book was taking me on and I can’t wait to see what happens in the second book. Congrats to Garcia for standing on her own and making a great start to what I hope is an amazing series.
