I’m going to try and keep this review as spoiler free as possible. Anything that I feel gives too much away will be kept in Spoiler boxes. Reading the Spoiler boxes is kind of an at your own risk thing.

Allegiant by Veronica Roth is a book that isn’t going to please everyone. It’s one of those things where Roth definitely took a chance with her fans. Depending on how you feel, the risk paid off or it backfired greatly. I’m somewhere in the middle. I would have read this book regardless of the hype prior to publication and the huge amount of posts post-publication rants and drama llamas. I’m probably going to read the short stories that are published as well. I have this thing with getting my series read all the way through.

I enjoyed spending more time with the characters. That’s probably what saved this book from being a complete wreck for me. To me personally, All OF THE CHARACTERS are what do it for me. If I enjoy the characters or even enjoy hating them, the book is going to rate high for me. The plot for me is what the plot is. I can’t say that I’ve ever been mad about a plot. Shocked, broken, excited, but never mad for any real length of time. I felt that the direction Roth took with the story was almost expected. I wasn’t completely shocked. All that negative press probably helped soften that blow. I can say that by the end of this book I was ready to be done with it. I debated on rating it 2.5 stars but in the end went with 3 stars. I enjoyed the story enough and it didn’t really upset me.

Now on to the things that frustrated me. Most of these things are big plot spoilers and there really isn’t a way for me to discuss them without giving away things:
[spoiler]The most frustrating thing in the whole experience for me was the fact that Tris is so damn special but there isn’t really anything special about her. At least, it’s never explained to us the readers. Why was she able to fight the Death serum? Her genes tested as a Divergent yet Roth makes it clear that Tris was the only person who could do that. Why?

Also, Allegiant is told from alternating perspectives from Tris and Tobias except that they sound like the exact same person. I bought this book for my Kindle and I couldn’t just flip the page over to reorient myself. I either had to flick back three or four pages or wait for the narrator to mention either Tris or Tobias or him or her.[/spoiler]
