Summary from Goodreads:
Beauty resents being labeled Gift Species. Everyone is way too overprotective, males aren’t even allowed to speak to her and so far true freedom eludes her. Then a big, sexy Species officer mistakes her for the enemy and takes her to the ground.
Shadow is dumbfounded. He has a Gift pinned under him—a big no-no. But Beauty is fascinated and wants to know Shadow a lot better. She is full of newly discovered, unrequited passion and he’s just what she needs to satisfy her curiosity.
For Shadow, sex means pain and revulsion. For Beauty, it was enslavement and ridicule. Two lonely souls who have never known a lover’s touch, together in a cabin in the woods. Each touch, every discovery brings them closer to a life they never thought possible…beyond even their dreams.
Well, I’m not sure what to say. I didn’t hate this one, but I didn’t like it all that much and I don’t like reviewing books I don’t like, so bare with me.
I guess after 9 books in a series, it’s difficult to find new stuff to write about, but this one just seemed rushed and unfinished for me. I have to admit, I had to push myself to finish this one, when at 50% I wanted to give up and throw my Kindle against the wall. Now, the beginning of this series was anything but. I loved the early books and have re-read some of them a few times!
There are plenty of dark subjects that Shadow and Beauty are dealing with, but the way they came together and the way it was portrayed just felt forced. I’ve loved Shadow from the beginning of this series and always hoped he’s get his own book, but now that I’m done with it and feeling unsatisfied, I just want to erase it from my mind and move on to the next. That’s right, there’s a 10th book in the series. I’m waiting a while to read it as I don’t think my heart can take another one like this!
I did love Shadow as a leading character until he got his ass beat by another species and ended up in the hospital. REALLY! Beauty actually did more fighting than him and thank God for the strong little “gift!” Glad there were cameos from past characters or I’m not sure I would have been able to finish it.
It was 274 (kindle pages) long and it took me over two weeks to get through. I’m sorry Laurann, but this one just isn’t one of your better ones… hopefully #10 is better!
