Operation: TBR Reduction Reboot

Posted August 1st, 2013 by in Bookish Events / 4 comments

Back in April 2012 I thought that publicly shaming myself would reign in my obsession of book buying. *Snort* It didn’t even slow me down. Not one tiny bit. You can see my shame here: the original shame. As you can see from Exhibit A:

It grows!

things have gotten worse.

Fact: I have so many books in my possession that I can’t wait to read.

Fact: I keep buying more! Kindle deals and half.com are totally to blame.

Operation TBR Reduction Button

In an effort to get this damn number down and get my husband and I in a better place financially I’m going to give Operation: TBR Reduction a reboot. I’m also pulling in the monthly budget to this post.

My Strategy:

*Clearly Step 1 is to read and to read from what I have.

*Step 2: Unsubscribe from all book vendors newsletters and update emails. Do not tempt the glutton. – Done

*Step 3: No book store visits until i feel that I have a) made a dent in the number and b) have a more firm will power.

*Step 4: Any books that I just HAVE TO READ can be borrowed from my library. I have a fantastic library with a great inter-library loan program. Pretty much any book I want I can get from the library.

*Step 5: Cut out Paperbackswap. As much as I love it, it’s got to go. Can’t lower my to be read number if I keep swapping one book for another. So…..for you guys that means Read It, Pass It is back!!! Woot!

I’ll start each month with a goals and progress report post. At the end of each month, I will have a check in pot. In the past I ran this so that others could participate. For now I want to try and tackle this alone. I want to be able to concentrate on reading. If I leave an open linky I’ll be more focused on cheering everyone else on and I need all the focus I’ve got right now! 🙂 Wish me luck!

I feel like mine is getting better, BUT I still have a really bad habit of buying books on sale for Kindle, or at the bookstore, OR getting that brand new book from that author or series I love … Needless to say, the shelves are getting FULL of unread books. But I like to think I will get to them. It’ll just take time! And when the time comes when I can’t just frivilously buy, then I’ll be prepared with entertainment!

I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to resist the Kindle book deals. I think I may work myself on some kind of earning system. Maybe along the lines of I read five I can buy one or something like that. I’m going to try and hold out for as long as I can.

Today REALLY tested that as Sherrilyn Kenyon’s books are $1.99 for the Kindle Daily Deals. So far I have resisted and I only have a few more hours to go so I’m thinking I’m safe!
