Summary from Goodreads:
Ella and Micha have been best friends since they were kids. But one tragic night shatters their friendship and their lives forever.
Ella used to be a rule-breaker with fiery attitude who wore her heart on her sleeve. But she left everything behind when she went to college and transformed into someone that follows the rules, keeps everything together, and hides all her problems. But now it’s summer break and she has nowhere else to go but home.
Ella fears everything she worked so hard to bury might resurface, especially with Micha living right next door. If Micha tries to tempt the old her back, she knows that it will be hard to resist.
Micha is sexy, smart, confident, and can get under Ella’s skin like no one else can. He knows everything about her, including her darkest secrets. And he’s determined to bring his best friend, and the girl he loves back, no matter what it takes.
Lately I have been wanting to dive into a New Adult book. I have read very few of these and since I have always enjoyed older YA stories I’ve made promises to myself to pick up the New Adult genre. Plus I have been seeing some fantastic reviews for this book as well as several other recent books to release in this newer genre.
At first I had a hard time connecting with Ella, and I think this is for the simple fact that she didn’t know who she was. She knew the Ella she wanted to cover up and the Ella she wanted the world to see but she wasn’t happy fully being either of those girls. She needed to find a comfortable mix between the wild Ella of her past and the new calm Ella that she was when she went away to college. I really felt bad for her, it isn’t easy not knowing who you are but because she was a bit wishy washy in who she was I found it hard to like her at first. Micha was a character I loved from the get go. I love my male characters cocky, full of themselves, and a little wild. Hey now I know what you are thinking but just let me have my fantasy men in my books at least!
The storyline seemed a little weak to me, this is where I struggled with the story at times. I really wanted to love the relationship that Ella and Micha had from when they were younger and all the hardships of their past. I will say I did buy into the relationship and Micha’s feelings for Ella. However, I had a hard time getting into the emotional side of the story. I just felt like some of the big reveals about their past felt like they were told to us instead of shown to us. So while I really loved watching Micha win Ella over in practically every chapter, gotta love a man for sticking to his lady right, I just didn’t buy the emotional drama from their home lives as much as I would have liked to. To me the emotions came from the two of them finally trying to figure out how to be together, not the past issues.
Overall, I really did enjoy watching these two in each scene together. There was a magnetic quality about them and their steamy kisses that I really was hooked to. I just wish there was a little more emotion behind their past mistakes. Plus I wish some of those scenes had not started with kissing and faded to black. Can’t falt a girl for wanting to see the cocky boy’s moves, come on we all know Micha must have them! All in all I can’t wait for the sequel and I hope to see Ella grow a little more.
