Still on my Mind was created and is hosted by Haley at YA-Aholic.The purpose of this meme is to share a book you read months or even years ago that is still on my (your) mind every Thursday.

The Book Still on My Mind this week is…

Dirty Little Secrets

dirty little secrets

Goodreads Summary:

Everyone has a secret. But Lucy’s is bigger and dirtier than most. It’s one she’s been hiding for years—that her mom’s out-of-control hoarding has turned their lives into a world of garbage and shame. She’s managed to keep her home life hidden from her best friend and her crush, knowing they’d be disgusted by the truth. So, when her mom dies suddenly in their home, Lucy hesitates to call 911 because revealing their way of life would make her future unbearable—and she begins her two-day plan to set her life right.

With details that are as fascinating as they are disturbing, C. J. Omololu weaves an hour-by-hour account of Lucy’s desperate attempt at normalcy. Her fear and isolation are palpable as readers are pulled down a path from which there is no return, and the impact of hoarding on one teen’s life will have readers completely hooked.

For those who have finished DLS, there is an “AFTER” chapter on the website Contains many spoilers, so only for those who have read the book.

Why It Is Still On My Mind

I read this book a while back and the life Lucy had to deal with and the decisions she has to make are unforgettable. It was sad reading about Lucy having to decide what to do after she finds her mom dead all because she doesn’t want the world to know about her mothers hoarding. She has always just wanted to be normal and if everyone finds out she never will be. She has tough decisions to make and all on her own. It was an interesting but sad read that I think others would enjoy as well.

*Also, I totally did not know C.J. Omololu wrote another chapter until I went to get the summary to post this. Must go read that now.

This is the author that wrote Transcendence? I didn’t realise that that wasn’t her debut! I haven’t heard much about this one, though I’m glad to hear that it left a lasting impression on you. I’ll definitely be sure to check it out now. 🙂

    Thanks for sharing!

  2. Reading Angel

I’ve had this one for so long! I don’t think I knew it had anything to do about hoarding, which is a topic I find fascinating. I may have to find this one on the shelf soon! 😀

It was my first book on the topic and although it wasn’t totally amazing it did still leave an impression.

  3. BornBookish

Wow this book sounds really intense! I’ve never read a book that dealt with hoarding but I think it would be really interesting.
