Welcome to the 1st week of the Harry Potter Read Along! This is going to be a long journey but I think we can all agree that it will be a great one. Here are my answers for Week 1.

It’s important that if you are re-reading this series that you answer the questions based only on the knowledge that we have so far!

1. At the beginning of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Dumbledore makes the decision to leave Harry in the care of his aunt and uncle. We see the results of that decision when Ron and Harry have a run in with Draco on the Hogwart’s Express. Do you agree with Dumbledore’s decision or do you feel Harry should have been brought up among his own people?

I think that Dumbledore did make the right decision. I don’t think that anyone could have guessed how truly horrible the Dursley’s would be to Harry. On top of that it would be really hard NOT to have an inflated opinion of yourself when the entire wizarding world thinks you ended Voldemort’s reign.

2. Hagrid comes to rescue Harry from the Dursley’s in a shack on a rock. If you were Harry would you have left with Hagrid?

To be honest, I don’t know that I would have. To say that I am generally a nervous person with underscores of mild paranoia is a bit of an understatement. I am incredibly cautious and trusting a stranger (even or perhaps especially one who looks like Hagrid) just isn’t in my nature. It’s why I read books! ๐Ÿ˜‰

3. Harry has a lot of info to digest all at once. He finds out he’s a wizard, there’s a whole magical community, his parents were in fact murdered, and the same wizard you killed his parents attempted to kill him as well. How would you have reacted to all of this?

To be honest, I probably would have been pretty terrified. That is a lot to take in. I think that it would be harder knowing that someone took your family rather than it being an accident. Does that make sense? I think that I’d be pretty upset about the whole ordeal. Harry seems to be pretty chill with it all. Looking at what his life was though it’s not too hard to make the leap that this is the best thing to happen to Harry.

4. Hogwarts students are allowed an owl, a cat, or a toad. What animal would you choose and why?

This one is pretty easy for me. I’d go with an owl and not just because of their practicality. Toads creep me out as does most of the creepy, crawly category and I am severely allergic to cats. If I had a cat the poor thing would kill me in my sleep. As Hagrid points out, owls are dead useful and I would love to have my own personal letter carrier. ๐Ÿ™‚

5. For the first time in his life, Harry has money and the chance to spend it however he wants. What would you have purchased at Diagon Alley?

Oh my goodness! To have the money that Harry does after being denied his whole life? I’d probably be buying the most beautiful quills and scrolls. Pretty inks would be at the top of my list. I love office supplies and writing stuff down. I can very easily see me spending quite a bit of money in the bookshop too! That was a given though.

Link up those HP thoughts!

As much as I’d like to believe I’d go with Hagrid, I could just imagine my mom telling me not to to talk strangers much less run off with them. Then again, if I had been living the life Harry did and someone gave the biggest bully a pig tail, it would have been an easy choice. ๐Ÿ˜›

Harry is rather nonchalant about the whole thing, isn’t he? I’d pretty upset too! Haha I would go crazy for stationary, I can only imagine the kind of amazing, magical inks Diagon Alley would have. ๐Ÿ™‚

He was pretty easy going about the whole you’re a wizard thing but I after really thinking it over the past few days maybe I would have done the same thing if it meant getting away from the Dursleys!

I hope you’re having fun participating!

    Here are my answers…

Q1. Do you agree with Dumbledoreโ€™s decision [to leave Harry with the Dursleys] or do you feel Harry should have been brought up among his own people?

This is a tough one. Basing this only on what I would have known had I never read any of the other books, I would have to say that it was good that he grew up away from the magical world. If he was surrounded by people who worshipped and spoiled him, he may not have grown up to be so humble and kind. On the other hand, it’s a shame that his muggle family didn’t tell him anything about his parents, their “world,” or his true history. Also, they certainly didn’t treat him with love and respect.

Q2. Hagrid comes to rescue Harry from the Dursleyโ€™s in a shack on a rock. If you were Harry would you have left with Hagrid?

No, I probably wouldn’t have left with Hagrid. Then again, I don’t know what it’s like to have spent 10 long years with a family who treated me so badly. So, in that case, maybe it makes sense that he was eager to leave. The letters make everything legit. ๐Ÿ™‚

Q3. How would you have reacted to all of this?

Too difficult to answer. I can’t even imagine being an eleven-year-old right now, let alone an abused eleven-year-old whose world is turned upside down. I guess that I would probably cling to anyone who was kind and warm to me–the way Hagrid is to Harry. I’d have a ton of questions and I wouldn’t be passive like Harry. I would be more like Hermione and read, ask, read, ask, until I had as many answers as I needed.

Q4. Hogwarts students are allowed an owl, a cat, or a toad. What animal would you choose and why?

Definitely an owl because they’re the fashionable choice and they serve two purposes (a pet and a delivery method). Cats sleep a lot and I can’t stand cat hair. Toads are just slimy and gross.

Q5. What would you have purchased at Diagon Alley?

Probably more books, witches clothes and accessories, and some ingredients from the aphothecary. I wouldn’t be that into flying, so no Nimbus 2000 for me.

Ok, now I’m going to go up and read other people’s answers. What fun!

Now that I read Isa’s response, I hope it’s ok that I posted my answers in the comment space on this page. I don’t have a blog. ๐Ÿ™‚

I picked an owl too! And I agree…Harry was too chill about this giant claiming he was magical lol. And I didn’t even think about quills and stuff, but that’s a great answer.

When I saw that last question I immediately started listing all the stuff I would buy…and then I realized that it was making my post twice as long as it needed to be, lol. My answers will be up tomorrow…I’m going to try and have them up on Monday’s from now on but it will depend on my scheduling for books.
