Pies and Prejudice by Ellery Adams is a fantastic first book to a great new cozy mystery series. Adams introduces us to a great set of characters. Ella Mae is a fun main character. She just recently caught her husband with the sisters from across the hall. She doesn’t just lose it right then and there. She takes her adorable dog Charleston Chew and leaves her philandering husband to head back home to the safety of her childhood home, mother, and nurturing aunts. Ella Mae hasn’t been in touch with her mother or back in her hometown in seven years. It might be a bit of a rocky start…..and that’s without the murder that’s got her pegged as the main suspect!
This book was so much fun guys! It was a culinary delight. It was a great cozy mystery. it had dashes of romance, and I’m not even kidding you there were fantasy elements. The thing about cozy mysteries for me is that I either really enjoy the story but have a hard time with the obvious mystery or the mystery is really good but I don’t really enjoy the story or characters. This was the best of both worlds. I don’t think there was one character that I didn’t like. In fact I wanted to pack my bags, head to Georgia, and open a bakery myself. Adams takes a bland description of a pie and sprinkles a little magic over it and before you know it, you can actually smell the pies. It doesn’t just stop at the food descriptions either. The descriptions of almost everything were so clear that it was easy to place yourself in the story.
I originally checked this book out from the library, since then I have purchased the sequel Peach Pies and Alibis and added Ellery Adams’s backlist to my wishlist. I can’t wait to get through her books! I have to say that if you enjoy cozy mysteries or a book centered around food, you should really give this book a try!
