City of Ghosts

Title: City of Ghosts
Author: Stacia Kane
Publisher: Del Rey
Publication Date: July 2010
Classification: Adult Novel
Content: Adult themes, violence, and sex

Summary from Goodreads:

Chess Putnam has a lot on her plate. Mangled human corpses have started to show up on the streets of Downside, and Chess’s bosses at the Church of Real Truth have ordered her to team up with the ultra-powerful Black Squad agency to crack the grisly case.

Chess is under a binding spell that threatens death if she talks about the investigation, but the city’s most notorious crime boss—and Chess’s drug dealer—gets wind of her new assignment and insists on being kept informed. If that isn’t bad enough, a sinister street vendor appears to have information Chess needs. Only he’s not telling what he knows, or what it all has to do with the vast underground City of Eternity.

Now Chess will have to navigate killer wraiths, First Elders, and a lot of seriously nasty magic—all while coping with some not-so-small issues of her own. And the only man Chess can trust to help her through it all has every reason to want her dead.

My Thoughts:

I loved the second book in this series so much that it was my favorite read of 2012. I can’t believe I waited this long to read this book.

The characters are a huge driving force behind my love of this series. I love how the heroine, Chess, seems like a real person with real issues. Plus she is kick ass but she is far from perfect. She needs drug such as speed and pills to keep up her daily life and she is a powerful churchwitch. She has made her mistakes in life but she does everything with the full force of her being and never backs down from a good fight. Then there is Terrible who is the local muscle man for a powerful drug lord. He is ruined, dark, mysterious, a fighter, and I’m completely taken with him. He has this soft side that I can’t help but love and while I was upset with him several times in this book I can’t help but really feel for this man. Plus the relationship between him and Chess is something that just lights up the pages with their fights, their passion, their romance. These two are heartbreaking and yet thrilling to read about. They are my drug of choice, a couple that I can not get enough of. I only wish they were featured more in this book, I missed some of their famous scenes from the first two books.

The storylines in this series are always wicked and smooth at the same exact time. I love how Kane mixes together the dark and desperate world of Downside with the bright and goodness of the Church of Truth. I love that Kane can mix together the bad and gritty world with relationships that mean so damn much they make your heart break. Plus all of the cases that Chess has to solve are amazing. I can hardly ever figure out what is going on from one minute to the next, I can never really figure out how the book will end, how the case will be solved and I love the mystery.

Simply put this series is amazing. I struggled through the first book but the second brought out so much love I can’t help but read more and more of Kane’s writing. This author has a way with words and a way with making realistic characters that you will fall for. This book wasn’t my favorite of the series but it was still a great book and I’m addicted and dying for more.

Oh gosh. I think I had the first book in the series and gave it away. How dumb was that? For you to say this is a favorite series truly impresses me. I may have to find another copy. Great review, Alexa!
