Caine's ReckoningTitle: Caine’s Reckoning
Author: Sarah McCarty
Narrator: Zoe Winslow
Publisher: Harlequin Spice
Publication Date: Nov 2007
Classification: Historical Erotica

Summary from Goodreads:
The Hell’s Eight is the only family he’s ever needed, until he meets the only woman he’s ever wanted…

Caine Allen is a hardened Texas Ranger, definitely not the marrying kind. But when he rescues a kidnapped woman and returns her to town, the preacher calls in a favor. One Caine’s honor won’t let him refuse. From the moment he beds Desi, Caine knows turmoil will follow. Desi might have the face of a temptress, but she also has a will of iron and while she needs his protection, she’s determined that no man will control her again. They establish an uneasy bond, but it isn’t enough for Caine. He wants all Desi has to offer. He wants her screams, her moans, her demands…everything. Yet there’s still a bounty on Desi’s head, and keeping her sexually satisfied is proving easier than keeping her alive.

My Thoughts:

When Alexa asked me if I’d be interested in reading any romance books for her February event, I didn’t hesitate. When she said that it could be anywhere from steamy to “melt your panties off”, I immediately knew that I wanted to review some of the Hell’s Eight series for Pages of Forbidden Love.

Caine’s Reckoning is the first book in the Hell’s Eight series. It is most definitely a “melt your panties off” book. I also think it’s a great book for people looking to try erotica because while it is erotic, it’s pretty vanilla. Sex is only ever between Caine and Desi and no one else and it doesn’t get too kinky. It falls into the erotica category simply because it is graphic….in the best way possible.

Caine Allen has gone through quite a lot in his relatively short life. He lost his parents at a young age and banded up with a few other boys who suffered the same fate. Not too long after that he became a Texas Ranger. It was either take that route or serve time in prison. Now he and his brothers are trying to get their ranch, Hell’s Eight, operational and functioning. Caine and a couple other of his brothers get called out to help the local town. It changes his life forever.

Desi has gone through so very much that no one should ever have to go through. Desi and her family moved from their nice East Coast home and traveled west after her father had read about its beautiful wilderness and adventures. Desi ends up alone and appointed to a guardian who then use her as a sexual plaything for a year. Desi trusts no one but herself. When she was kidnapped with a few of the local townswomen, she sees it as a chance to escape. She almost did too until the Texas Rangers showed up.

Through an interesting twist of fate Caine and Desi end up hitched that day and they begin a tumultuous journey. Desi trusts no one and Caine is a man used to being trusted until that trust is broken. These two characters have a lot to work through emotionally and physically. It did get aggravating at times to watch Desi constantly being suspicious of Caine. I know that she has a lot to work past and it wasn’t going to get better over night but it still tried my patience. The setting is also one that I can’t get enough of. Texas, 1858. It is a hard and rugged country and it really builds the bonds between the characters.

Audiobook Review: Zoe Winters did a good job in this audiobook. It was clear which characters were speaking. I was never confused about where I was in the story and she never lagged anywhere. Overall, I enjoyed the audiobook version of Caine’s Reckoning.
