Full Moon Rising
#1 in the Riley Jenson Guardian Series
Author: Keri Arthur
Format: Mass Market Paperback
In this exciting debut, author Keri Arthur explodes onto the supernatural scene with a sexy, sensuous tale of intrigue and suspense set in a world where legends walk and the shady paths of the underworld are far more sinister than anyone envisioned.
A rare hybrid of vampire and werewolf, Riley Jenson and her twin brother, Rhoan, work for Melbourne’s Directorate of Other Races, an organization created to police the supernatural races–and protect humans from their depredations. While Rhoan is an exalted guardian, a.k.a. assassin, Riley is merely an office worker–until her brother goes missing on one of his missions. The timing couldn’t be worse. More werewolf than vampire, Riley is vulnerable to the moon heat, the weeklong period before the full moon, when her need to mate becomes all-consuming.…
Luckily Riley has two willing partners to satisfy her every need. But she will have to control her urges if she’s going to find her brother….Easier said than done as the city pulses with frenzied desire, and Riley is confronted with a very powerful–and delectably naked–vamp who raises her temperature like never before.
In matters carnal, Riley has met her match. But in matters criminal, she must follow her instincts not only to find her brother but to stop an unholy harvest. For someone is doing some shifty cloning in an attempt to produce the ultimate warrior–by tapping into the genome of nonhumans like Rhoan. Now Riley knows just how dangerous the world is for her kind–and just how much it needs her.
What I Liked: I liked how this book opened up with time. Not everything was on the line from the very start of the story, instead the reader actually has to piece together the plot as it happens. Over the entire course of this story I got to explore this great mystery with the main character Riley, who is pretty kick ass if I do say so myself. I highly enjoyed that she was real, the author didn’t make her this nice little princess waiting for a helping hand. Riley was strong, fierce, compassionate towards others, and had flaws.
Of course a leading lady can not stand on her own so there was a great cast of supporting characters that range from her old man of a boss, her gay brother and his partners, to a very sexy old vampire named Quinn *pulls out a fan*. Along with all the great characters and plot there came some great steamy scenes that will have any romance reader thinking they are reading a romance novel instead of an adult urban fantasy book.
What I Could Have Lived Without: There were a few small bumps here and there that did bother me. The story was sometimes centered around sex scenes that didn’t really seem to mean anything, sometimes they were just thrown in there. I mean I’m not one to turn down a steamy scene but maybe there could have been less of the little smaller ones that didn’t really progress the story or relationships along. Another thing that bothered me slightly was the ramblings on the moon phase or the moon fever that Riley was feeling. It was probably mentioned at least 15 or more times. I get it she has this huge sexual fever during the moon growing full. I don’t need to hear about it 15 separate times to get the point.
Recommended For: I would recommend this one for romance and UF readers alike since it was so great for both those genres.
Avoid If: If a book heavy in sex scenes or some violent scenes isn’t to your liking.
