1. Claire has been given the task of healer at the castle. She must adapt her nursing skills for the time and learn what herbs and etc will cure each particular ailment that is presented to her. Do you have any home remedies that were passed down to you (cure for a cold, bee sting or what have you)?
Alexa: Sadly, my family is not cool like that. I don’t have any home remedies and I’m not sure I would believe in them anyway. Since I’m currently studying for a medical degree I guess I’m one of those people that will trust science over herbal mixtures.
Stephanie: No one in my family is medically gifted. 🙁 Looks like I wouldn’t make it long in Highlander times.
2. What do you think would be the biggest challenge of living in the past? (Clothing, hygiene, food, etiquette or etc.)
Alexa: For me I’m sure it would be hygiene and food. I’m a huge clean freak with slight OCD so not being clean all the time would really freak me out. I mean a world with no hand sanitizer would be a world I wouldn’t want to live in. I’m also super picky about food and I don’t eat much meat and since the diets back then were mostly meat products I would fair very poorly. I actually think the clothes and etiquette would be pretty cool to see.
Stephanie: Hmmmm…I’m going to go with the inability to communicate swiftly. I think if the Highlanders would have had the communication capabilities that we have today, a lot of their woes could have been circumvented. They would have had a better idea of what was going on in their own ranks as well as the rest of the world.
3. Do you have a favorite character, scene or quote so far? If so, share it with us.
Alexa: So far Claire would have to be my favorite character. I love that although she is in a world she knows nothing about that she is adapting well but also strong enough to try to find her own way home. She really is a strong heroine and I love those types of characters! Ok so maybe I’m also lusting after Jaime just a little. I need to know more about him though to make my decision final. 🙂
Stephanie: My favorite scene so far is Murtagh in Claire’s room before the wedding. For some reason Murtagh always makes me giggle! This scene in particular:
I jumped and shuddered, spilling the port, as the door crashed open once more. One damn thing after another, I thought balefully. This time it was a double visitation, Murtagh and Ned Gowan, wearing similar looks of disapprobation. I exchanged glares with Ned while Murtagh came into the room and walked slowly around the bed, surveying me from every angle. He returned to Ned and muttered something in a tone too low for me to hear. With a final glance of despair in my direction, he pulled the door shut behind them.
4. What did you think about the addition of the blood bond in the wedding ceremony? Is this something you would do with the one you love?
Alexa: It is always cool to see different rituals whether they are from the past or right now. No two people ever have the exact same wedding ceremony so it is always great to see personal touches. I’m not sure that in this day in age that people should exchange blood though with all the diseases out there.
Stephanie: While I think it was something special for the times, I don’t think I could do it today.
5. Are you reading along closely with the scheduled chapters or are you ahead or behind?
Alexa: Right now I’m ahead by a week. I’m at chapter 21 or so right about now. I hope to keep up since I’m going on vacation for several days soon.
Stephanie: Hah! This is a re-read for me. I did however download the audiobook from Audible and I’ve listened to the book again. I also have the ebook so I go in and check the last chapter for that week’s questions to make sure I don’t give anything away!
