Summary from Goodreads:
For the past five months Essallie Hanley has been trying to forget about the frightening murder of her boyfriend. Haunted by vivid nightmares and hallucinations of the event she does anything she can to pretend she’s like every other normal girl in High School.
Only Essallie is far from normal. Able to conjure blue fire and a shimmering silhouette of wings from her body, she seeks the only known solace left to her name; her first home in Belfast, Maine.
But she soon realizes that her return home is only the beginning of a long and twisted road taking her as far from her humanity as possible, with Kayden, the demon originally summoned to slaughter her, leading the way. Unable to touch her but oddly curious, he joins Essallie in her search to find out just what she is. But neither of them were prepared for the secrets they’ve begun to unravel, secrets that will change Essallie and everyone around her forever.
Before starting Illumine I thought I was in for one type of story. I expected the heroine, Essallie, to have to go on this great adventure and along the way she would meet the demon, Kayden. When I started to read the book I realized I was in for a very different adventure but it was even better than I expected!
I know a lot of people in the blogging world and those who read books in general are really up and down with angel books. Sometimes there is far too much religion involved and sometimes they just don’t work how we want them to. I know many people even go so far to say that they won’t read an angel book or that they only like one series out of several angel series they have read but I beg of you to give this book a chance because it is certainly worth it!
First off the story starts off pretty normal but soon takes some dark creepy turns that I couldn’t help but love. As many of you know by now I have recently started to like darker and more edgy stories and the beginning of this book starts off with a bang. After the initial shock wears off you can’t help but start to feel for Essallie and Kayden. As a reader you really don’t know what is going on until much later on in the story but the ride getting to slowly learning about not just them but the other secondary characters is such great fun.
Overall, I don’t want to give too much away because the book is only 150 pages so I don’t want to tell you everything that happens. What I can say is that this book will turn normal angel stories completely around and it certainly is not coated with religion as some people fear. Plus this book is just enough to wet your appetite (lol this is a good joke once you learn about Kayden), you don’t get to learn everything in this book and now I can’t wait to read the second book because I must, MUST know more about the world that Essallie and Kayden live in. I want to learn more about Kayden and his secrets, such as where the heck he came from and what his past is and I need to see more adventures in the cool as heck world that takes place away from mortal eyes, the world that Luke introduces her to in the book. This book is magical, dark, and funny and I can’t wait to spend more time with these characters and with the way this one ended you will be dying to know what happens. This story gets 4.5 hearts from me for being a thrilling ride, one I can’t wait to continue in Obumbrate, book two.
Today I’m honored to celebrate Alivia’s birthday week and of course help her get word out about Illumine. I remember telling her back in Jan that I just didn’t have time to read her book for review even though I desperately wanted to. Now I’m sorry that I waited so long to dive into this great book. In order to allow one of you to check it out we have put together a great giveaway for you.
