Title: Perception
Author: Kim Harrington
Publisher: Scholastic Point
Publication Date: March 2012
Classification: YA Novel
Challenge: None

Summary from Goodreads:

When you can see things others can’t, what do you do when someone’s watching you?

Everybody knows about Clarity “Clare” Fern. She’s the psychic girl in school, the one who can place her hands on something and see hidden visions from the past.

Only Clare would rather not be a celebrity. She prefers hanging back, observing. Her gift is not a game to her.

But then someone starts playing with her head . . . and heart. Messages and gifts from a secret admirer crop up everywhere Clare turns. Could they be from Gabriel, the gorgeous boy who gets Clare’s pulse racing? Or from Justin, Clare’s hopeful ex-boyfriend who’d do anything to win her back?

One thing is certain. Clare needs to solve this mystery, and soon. Because the messages are becoming sinister, and a girl in town has suddenly disappeared.

My Thoughts:

I greatly enjoyed Clarity when I read it about a year ago so I could not wait to get my hands on Perception. Clarity introduced the reader to a story that felt unique to me in the sea of YA books. I love when you can find a book that has some qualities that you might not see often in the genre or read about often. Sadly, while reading Perception I had what every reader dreads, I had my mind on all of the books this book was similar to. Not to say it wasn’t a good story, just not as unique as I would have liked, but let me break it down for you.

We still get all of the great characters, Clare, Perry, Justin and Gabriel, oh how I love each and every one of them. I felt like I got to connect more with each character in this book than I did in the last one and that was a great experience. Of course there is another murder case that Clare wants to solve in this book but this is where the story started to become similar, maybe too similar to some other books I’ve read before. See Clarity was unique because it was a murder case that Clare was only connected to because her brother was a suspect. However, in Perception Clare has a stalker, she must figure out who that is before she ends up dead. She gets to use her supernatural powers to try to figure out who said stalker is. I’m sorry but this type of murder case just reminded me too darn much of The Body Finder mixed with a bit of Deadly Little Secret (Touch Series). I just felt like this stalker thing had been done before so it didn’t impress me as much as the murder case did in the first book.

Overall, I still like this series, I thought this book was good, just not as amazing as the first book. One thing that I really did enjoy, other than the characters, was the romantic subplot in this book. In the first book Clare did a bit of kissing on each boy and in this book the boys finally make her come to a decision. I don’t know why but I always love the book out of a series where the girl has to finally decide who she is going to be with. I guess I just enjoy the drama of watching both guys fight for the girl’s heart until she picks her guy. I know most people no longer have any respect for Twilight but I loved Eclipse for the reason that the guys were fighting for her, it leads to exciting times. Of course it was perfect to watch Justin and Gabriel, who are both so different, fight for Clare’s love. I swear even at the end of this one I had no clue who she was going to pick, whereas the stalker was someone that I had figured out a bit earlier in the book.

So for some minor flaws this book gets 4 hearts from me, since this book ended on a sort of final note I do hope we will get more books in this series.

Haven’t started this series yet but I want to! It sounds great and the romance seems really good too. The stalker thing has been overdone but I’m still intrigued. Great review :).

I am so excited to read this one – I LOVE the characters so much. Clarity was one of the only books I’ve not been able to pick a “team” for. 🙂
