|OUAC Welcomes: Kathryne Kennedy
I’ve just recently discovered Kathryne and she writes wonderful fantasy romance! You can check out my reviews of The Fire Lord’s Lover and The Lady of the Storm. Kathryne’s going to answer a few questions for us. I hope you enjoy them!
OUAC: Tell us a little bit about yourself Kathryne!
KK: I’ve been married a very long time; have two sons, two Chihuahuas, and a wonderful family.
OUAC: Who are some of your favorite authors?
KK: So many! Off the top of my head: Erin Quinn, Jennifer Ashley, Jaqueline Carrey, Andre Norton, Patricia Briggs, Sharon Shinn, Eloisa James, Jude Deveraux.
OUAC: What are some of your favorite pastimes?
KK: Reading, of course. Being with my family. Movies, shopping.
OUAC: Do you have any guilty pleasures? (Chocolate, Reality TV, etc.)
KK: Interesting that you mentioned two of mine! Yes, I have a weakness for chocolate, and reality TV (I think it’s all those different personalities that hold my attention). I also like to collect little fairy statues, and can’t resist velvet, roses and anything Victorian.
OUAC: What is the best writing advice you’ve received?
KK: Use a nickel word instead of a quarter.
OUAC: What drew you to writing fantasy romance?
KK: My love of both genres.
OUAC: What is your favorite part of your career?
KK: Finding readers who are passionate about my books.
OUAC: You have created a very fabulous and intricate world in your Elven Lord series. How do you keep it all straight?
KK: I’m grateful to hear that you think so! I use lots of notes, charts and maps.
OUAC: How did you come up with each elven realm and its magical specialty?
KK: That’s part of what I call my brainstorming process, when I have that first spark of an idea and start building on it. The four elements of earth came naturally (a classic part of fantasy), and then I just expanded on it.
OUAC: What’s the background story to Giles’ enchanted sword? (I was very intrigued by his father and brother.)
KK: Giles’s younger brother, John, forged it with his own blood, since he inherited a great deal of the elven’s powers. John was tested at the age of six and sent to Elfhame (ie, murdered by the elven lord) and Giles’s father tried to kill the elven lord of Bladehame for it. He used the sword that John had made, for John had crafted it to withstand magical assaults as well as physical. But it could not withstand the power of a scepter, and Giles’s father was killed, and Giles was left with the sword and a single-minded yearning for vengeance.
OUAC: I’ve adored the dragons in your books! (They are a sarcastic bunch!:}) Will there be a dragon appearance in each Elven Lord book?
KK: That’s so great to hear, because I enjoy creating them, and yes, to varying degrees, there will be dragons in each book.
OUAC: Do you have a favorite scene in The Lady of the Storm? (As few spoilers as possible)
KK: I have several, so this is always a difficult question to answer, but today I think I’ll go with the scene where Cecily uses her power of water to make love to Giles. It was a lot of fun. :}
OUAC: Can you tell us a little bit about The Lord of Illusion (in stores February 2012)? Do you have plans to continue the series beyond this third book?
KK: The Lord of Illusion is about a scholar who has suffered debilitating visions for years, until he finally finds a clue to the key to the doorway to Elfhame, and sets off to rescue the slave girl who may hold it. This third book is the conclusion to the series, but I have left it open for prequels/sequels. There are several realms I have left unexplored, and I’m finding it hard to resist the temptation to do so.
OUAC: Thanks for stopping by Kathryne!! I loved your books and am anxious to read The Lord of Illusion.
