Title: A Beautiful Dark
Author: Jocelyn Davies
Publisher: Harper Teen
Publication Date: September 27, 2011
Classification: YA Novel
Challenge: Outdo Yourself

Summary from Goodreads:
Skye never questioned the story of her life. Her Aunt Jo adopted her after the death of her parents when she was just a child, and together they flip through memories the way some people flip through photo albums.

She never questioned if the stories were true.

Until the night of her 17th birthday, when the arrival of two strangers intrudes on her cozy life. Polar opposites, like fire and ice, Asher is dark and wild, while Devin is fair, cold, and aloof. Skye has no idea what they wantโ€”only that their presence coincides with the beginning of some shockingly strange events. Events that Skye, if she dares to think it, might be responsible for causing.

My Thoughts:

This book basically starts off just like all paranormal YA stories do. With a girl, in this case her name is Skye, is trying to live a normal life when she starts to notice strange things going on. Of course to create the love triangle early on we have two mysterious guys who come into the picture in order to “help” Skye with her new changes. One guy is Devin who is calm and peaceful with light hair, he takes the slower approach with more tranquility. Then there is Asher who is the typical bad boy with black hair and of course he is very forward and basically a rebel.

Eventually the reader learns that Devin and Asher are there to help Skye with her developing powers. This is actually probably the best part of the story, this is when the reader gets to see the legend behind Devin, Asher, and Skye’s birthright. I don’t want to give the legend away because it really is the best part of the whole story so you’ll have to read this part for yourself. (evil I know lol) From the part of the legend on things start to make sense but there is a deeper mystery as to why Devin and Asher are really there, are they there to help protect Skye or are they out to harm her?

Overall, I’m basically saying that this was like all paranormal stories, some of the elements of course have already been done before. Is the story original, in my opinion, its not but that is just me. I did really enjoy the legend but the story leaves off on a big cliffhanger. I wish that authors would stop thinking that they have to leave us hanging at the end in order for us to want to pick up the second book. Since there was a cliffhanger all of the real action of the story takes place in the last 30 or so pages. Will I read the next book? Probably, but I’m just not on the edge of my seat with this one, it was a good read so it gets 4 hearts from me.

Quote: “Sometimes you have to risk a little bit of pride to fall in love.”
“Cassie.” I sighed. “You’ve never been in love. How do you know what you’re talking about?”
“I read it in Cosmo,” she said. “When you like someone, you have to allow yourself to be vulnerable enough to let them in. Love is messy.” ~A Beautiful Dark pg. 172 in ARC Version.

While cliffhangers are probably a good device to get people to buy your next book, I honestly enjoyed more series that didn't use them and were just well written.

  2. ComaCalm

The blurb sounds pretty good but if it's like a lot of other books and ends on a cliffhanger I'm a little wary of it now… I think I'll read it if I get it but I'm not about to go out of my way to get a copy! ๐Ÿ™‚

Sad to hear this one isn't super amazing – I thought it looked and sounded absolutely brilliant. I still am excited to read it though ๐Ÿ™‚

The Bibliophile- Yeah the cliffhanger idea is just getting old to me. To me if a book catches my interest then I'll pick up the second book without there needing to be a cliffhanger.

Comacalm- It was still a good read just didn't stand out to me personally.

Erica- It was good but something about it just didn't blow me outta the water. I hope you enjoy it though ๐Ÿ™‚

I just saw this one on Netgalley! I was debating if I should request it or not….I definitely DON'T need to start another series unless it's amazing!
