The very talented HP Mallory is joining us today at Once Upon a Chapter. HP has self-published three pretty awesome stories with some smart heroines. You can find reviews for To Kill a Warlock, Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble and Toil and Trouble by clicking on the titles. Without further ado, here’s HP!
OUAC: When did you know you wanted to become a writer?
HP: I’ve always wanted to be a writer, ever since I was a little girl. I was an English major in college (Yay Bruins!) and then life sort of got in the way and I didn’t focus on writing until I was living in the UK about 4 years ago. That’s when I wrote Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble.
OUAC: What inspired you to write paranormal romances?
HP: I love reading paranormal romance and urban fantasy so it was a natural that I’d want to write in these genres as well.
OUAC: Are you interested in any particular paranormal entity more so than others?
HP: Well, I’ve always been a vampire girl. But, ever since reading Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series, I really enjoyed the idea of the fae and whatever Barrons was! LOL
OUAC: In To Kill a Warlock Dulcie wants to write an historical romance but her agent/publicist tells her to write what’s popular and to write a paranormal. Does this describe your situation at all? Is there an historical romance just waiting to be published?
HP: Well, Dulcie’s writing is definitely based on my own with the exception of the fact that Dulcie isn’t exactly thrilled about writing paranormals! LOL I have always loved writing paranormals whereas Dulcie has to warm up to them. I did write a historical romance—it was the first book I ever wrote and it was about the American Colonies during the Revolution and it was horrible! LOL I actually tried to resurrect it and thought about self publishing it but it was so bad, it was just beyond repair.
I am planning to continue telling my own writing history as seen through Dulcie as her series continues.
OUAC: Who is your favorite heroine to write?
HP: That’s a tough one because my two heroines are so different. I love Jolie’s candid humor but I also love Dulcie’s strength so I think it’s a tossup!
OUAC: Who is your favorite male romantic lead to write?
HP: I think I’m stuck on this one too. I love Rand and I love Sinjin and I do love Knight. So, can I pick all of them? LOL
OUAC: Jolie certainly has a tough choice between Rand and Sinjin. Personally, who do you find more attractive?
HP: Ooo I can’t answer this one!
OUAC: Aside from writing what else do you enjoy doing?
HP: I love to travel—traveling is one of my absolute passions in life and I would love to live abroad again some time!
OUAC: Most of us have a sweet tooth for chocolate or a favorite reality show we can’t get enough of….can you tell us about one of your guilty pleasures?
HP: Hmm I do love chocolate and I also love True Blood!
OUAC: What is your favorite food?
HP: Mexican Food
OUAC: Are there any books on your “keeper shelf?”
HP: So many to list. I love the classics and would never part with any in my collection!
OUAC: Who are your favorite authors? Favorite books? Do you have any “autobuy” authors?
HP: Classics would be Jane Austen. More recent books, I really enjoyed Karen Marie Moning’s Fever Series. I am now reading Larissa Ione’s Demonica series and enjoying that. I also really enjoyed the Sookie Stackhouse books and the early Anita Blake books.
OUAC: What books do you have lurking in the TBR pile?
HP: So many I don’t even know where to start!
OUAC: Are you currently working on a book? If so, can you tell us a little bit about it?
HP: Yes, I’m madly working on the next Dulcie book which will be nonstop action! LOL Then I’ve got to start the next book in the Jolie series and then it will be back to another Dulcie book and then the next 2 books in the Jolie series!
OUAC: I first started reading your books when you sent a request to Once Upon A Chapter. Then you were a self-published author with a great talent since then you have been signed to major publishing house Random House. How does that feel?
HP: It’s amazing. My life has changed so drastically from July 1, 2010 when I first self published my Jolie and Dulcie books. I signed a 3 book deal with Random House last month for the next three books in the Jolie series and I’m so excited to see where my career is going to take me! The best part is that I’m still an indie author because I’m still self publishing my Dulcie series so I really have the best of both worlds.
OUAC: Do you have any advice for aspiring authors who are currently self-publ
ishing or are looking to self-publish?
HP: Just never give up. Don’t doubt yourself ever—just keep at it and if one avenue doesn’t seem to be working out, don’t be afraid to try a different one!
OUAC: Where do Dulcie and Jolie go from here?
HP: I guess you will have to wait and see! LOL I have a wild ride planned for both Jolie and Dulcie!
