Dulcie O’Neil is a Regulator for the Netherworld. She helps to keep humans from suspecting the presence of the citizens of the Netherworld. Most of the time, it’s pretty cut and dry with little variation. Then one day, a shady Netherworld merchant is brutally murdered and the killer leaves behind very little trace evidence. Of course, Dulcie’s name has to be cleared as said merchant changed her into a big bugary monster earlier that day. Yes, that’s right, a monster made of snot. *eww*

A man comes to Dulcie in her dreams and tells her that he needs to speak with her. As if a man invading your dreams isn’t bad enough, this particular man meets up with her in real life. Knight Vander works in a highly private section of the Netheworld and instructs Dulcie that she is to help him and not tell anyone about him  and their side investigation, including her boss at the Regulators Office.

Knight and Dulcie work together and undercover to discover the killer and the motive behind the sudden killing spree. At times, Dulcie’s trust in everyone around her is tested and she must choose who she can and cannot believe. In the end, Dulcie may not want to figure out who is behind it all.

To Kill a Warlock by H P Mallory has a great premise and for most of the book I didn’t have a clue as to who the bad guy might be. The romance in this book is down-played quite a bit. There are several men who show interest in Dulcie but one “hero” is never pinned down. There are four viable options for the hero. For me, that’s not what I’m looking for in a romance. I like a good solid couple whom I can relate to. This is the first book in a series and while the mystery is solved, it’s obvious that this book will have a sequel.  This also isn’t a typical romance as the romantic elements of the plot are not resolved by the end of the book.

With that being said, I like this book enough that I look forward to reading the next chapter in Mallory’s Dulcie O’Neil series. I’d like to find out who ends up being the love of Dulcie’s life!
