He set out to seduce her for all the wrong reasons -- but found himself falling in love with her for all the right ones.
Alex Knight is dead -- or so everyone thinks. A widowed logger baron with a risk-taking streak, he took on a South American engineering project and was reported dead after a rebel attack. So when he turns up back in Maine very much alive, his grieving family is shocked. But the biggest shock is Alex's, when he discovers he's now married -- to a woman he's never met.
Sarah Banks is ready for a change from running a quiet Bed & Breakfast, and working for the Knight family offers not only a bigger opportunity, but also the family life she yearns for. So she's glad to help secure custody of Alex's orphaned children, whom she's come to love, by marrying their father by proxy before he's legally declared dead. But when Alex returns, the sexy, determined woodsman upends all of Sarah's plans. Because suddenly she's married to a passionate stranger with an easy smile...and tumbling headlong into a fiery dance of seduction.
This book has been on my shelves for a long time. It was also one of the books on my list this year to read or decide to maybe get rid of if my interests have changed. I still love romance books so I didn’t want to donate this one unless I gave it a try. Plus I haven’t ever read a book about men in the woods who are loggers and deal with that particular business. I wanted to read a book about such a rugged working man so I decided to dive into this one.
This review contains SPOILERS*****
I have to say I wasn’t really that impressed from the start. The female lead, Sarah, just lets her husband (who she never met and believed to be dead) sleep with her their very first night meeting. She also doesn’t make him use any form of protection and she was a virgin to top it all off. I was very concerned at this point because in so many romance stories the man always has enough sense to wear protection. I mean if you are a romance reader this is a sticking point in so many romance tales. The men will never just sleep with a girl the first time without protection. So I’m really upset the author didn’t include this in the story because it is a romance staple. Who wants some random guy to sleep with you after a few hours of meeting him and not use a form of protection. I felt this made both her characters weak right from the start. What woman wouldn’t demand that. What man would be so irresponsible.
Aside from the rocky beginning I wanted to give the characters a second chance to change things around. I wasn’t really that impressed with the rest of the novel. Sarah seemed to know she was a bombshell and she seemed to understand she was sexy but when it came to her times with Alex she made him work so hard and she then would pretend she had no idea what she was doing. Which one is it? Is she a virgin who doesn’t know what a man wants or is she a bombshell who knows how to flaunt her curves and moves to win him? This was really annoying and bugged me. Also Alex never really did anything to earn her love and affection.
Round out the story with her being pregnant from their one sexual encounter at the beginning and I was done. I finished the novel but this one wasn’t for me.
