It's the accident season, the same time every year. Bones break, skin tears, bruises bloom.
The accident season has been part of seventeen-year-old Cara's life for as long as she can remember. Towards the end of October, foreshadowed by the deaths of many relatives before them, Cara's family becomes inexplicably accident-prone. They banish knives to locked drawers, cover sharp table edges with padding, switch off electrical items - but injuries follow wherever they go, and the accident season becomes an ever-growing obsession and fear.
But why are they so cursed? And how can they break free?
If you are looking for a quick spooky read then this is the book for you.
I have to say this is one unusual book and I mean that in the best way possible. I really liked that in this book everything seemed fine on the surface. The family simply had accidents during a certain time of the year, this was perfectly normal to them and so you as a reader start to feel that it is normal as well. I believed in all the spooky elements and times gone wrong for this quirky family. I believe this book is written beautifully because you feel like the main character of the book, Cara. You think that everything is normal and that this accident season is only something your family deals with. You hide underneath all of the layers that the family protects themselves in. You believe everything is completely normal.
I have to say that the characters in this book are a little bland from time to time. They seem to not stand out as brightly against the world and plot they were put into. The plot of this book and the underlying secrets make you so intrigued that you sort of forget all of the clear details about the characters themselves. You find yourself wrapped up in the mystery, the bruises, the ghosts that the rest falls to the wayside. I found one of the most interesting characters to be Cara’s older sister, Alice. She had some fire to her character while also being mysterious throughout the book and keeping everything to herself.
Overall, I don’t want to say too much about this book because all of the goodness of this book comes from not knowing what is going on. I will say the world, the mystery, the spookiness of this book is what really makes it. All of the issues with the family and their secrets pull this book together. I just with the characters could have shined a little more.
