New Orleans. The city of good food, great jazz, loose women, and fast living - The Big Easy. But there is a dark side to the Crescent city, a promise of quick and deadly violence that lurks on the steamy streets and in the murky swamps. And someone is bringing that awful promise to life.
For Chief Medical Examiner Andy Broussard, death is as commonplace and familiar as getting out of bed. For his new assistant, Kit Franklyn, death is more immediate, and more gruesome. But both of them believe they understand it, until people in New Orleans, happy, well-adjusted - normal - people begin to kill. Kill their loved ones. Kill themselves. A husband and father burns his family and himself alive. A small businessman plows through a crowd of pedestrians before driving off a bridge. A couple of fishing buddies off to the bayou park in front of a freight train. Broussard and Franklyn must find out why the killings are happening, and what - or who - is causing them. But the clues are few, and more and more people are killing - and dying.
Broussard detects evidence of scleral hemorrhaging in the eyes of the corpses. Witnesses give Franklyn another clue, reporting a chilling and puzzling coincidence: the killers were overheard humming nursery rhymes before each incident. As the case progresses the two investigators are drawn further away from the comfortable modern world of science, and deeper into the dark past of New Orleans, a world of voodoo curses and bloody revenge.
An old woman's bayou fold tale and an old man's secret give Broussard and Franklyn the final keys to the mystery, but as they close in the culprit, a terrible truth dawns. The nightmare of death washing over New Orleans is coming for them. Like the best of Stephen King, Cajun Nights is a haunting tale of suspense. - from book jacket flap
I had a hard time trying to get a hold of Cajun Nights by D J Donaldson. I discovered Donaldson when Astor+Blue asked me to review his newest release Bad Karma in the Big Easy. I loved it and needed more of Andy Broussard and Kit Franklin.
Cajun Nights blended all of the things I love in one book. It had Southern gentility, a haunting voodoo, and a great ending. I enjoyedgetting to learn about all of the characters I already know. Their orgins were different from what I already know going into the book.
The only thing that stopped this book from a five star rating is that the ending was just a tad too convenient. I am really glad that i have th erest of this series to glom on! They were certainly with the hassle to find.
