Summary from Goodreads:
Long live the King…
After turning his back on the throne for centuries, Wrath, son of Wrath, finally assumed his father’s mantle–with the help of his beloved mate. But the crown sets heavily on his head. As the war with the Lessening Society rages on, and the threat from the Band of Bastards truly hits home, he is forced to make choices that put everything–and everyone–at risk.
Beth Randall thought she knew what she was getting into when she mated the last pure blooded vampire on the planet: An easy ride was not it. But when she decides she wants a child, she’s unprepared for Wrath’s response–or the distance it creates between them.
The question is, will true love win out… or tortured legacy take over?
This is one of my favorite series in paranormal romance and has been for a long time. I gobble up every single book written the moment it appears on the shelf at the bookstore for me to purchase. Even though this book is almost 600 pages and I am busy with school I still read it relatively quickly even though I should space out these books so I don’t have to wait another year for the next one. While it is true that over the years this series has had some bad moments where the books didn’t live up to my high expectations I still really enjoy aspects of all of the books.
I really love Wrath, he is my second favorite after V so I was excited when this book was said to be about him. Well I feel the beginning of this book suffers from the same thing Lover at Last suffered from… too many characters and too many plot lines! I swear there are so many different POVs to read from and so many directions that this story is going in that I find it hard to care sometimes. I just want to read about my brothers and their wives and live in a little happy romance world. Even though I know I would never be happy with that because I have always enjoyed the fact that this series is romance with a real plot line. I just feel there are too many damn plot lines! How many random people like Sola should I have to read about without a clue as to why they are important in the story line.
As the book went on this problem did get a little better due to the fact that everyone was settling down a little in this book. It allowed us to see more of the relationships and more romance between couples like Wrath & Beth, Assail & Sola, Trez & Selena, etc. I have to say one of my favorite parts of this book was learning more about the Shadows Trez and iAm. I really have loved those two for a long time and have always wanted to know more about them so I’m really happy the next book is about them.
As for the storyline of this book I feel like I did get some things I wanted and some things I didn’t. I wanted there to be this epic battle over the crown and that never happened in this book. It was pretty dull on that front. I’m tired of my warriors sitting at home knitting! I want them out there defending the race and fighting the Band of Bastards. I wanted some more action. Speaking on the action front I thought the needing between Wrath and Beth was weak. We only got to see a few fade to black scenes during the needing and then she was waking up after it was all over. BORING! I wanted an intense needing like the one Z and Bella had.
I feel like I should end this review before I do anymore ranting and raving! I did love certain aspects of this book and I feel it did give us time to see some romance again but there was also a lot missing, like always. Too many POVs are making this series suffer and I want Ward to bring some clarity because even though I do love these characters I’m also tired of reading books that barely move the story along because there are too many stories moving slowly forward in each book lately. Bring some clarity Ward before we all lose interest!
