Outlander Read-a-Long Chapters 22 – 28

This week’s questions are brought to us from Into the Hall of Books. Alexa is reading this book for the first time and Stephanie is re-reading it. It will be interesting to see how the opinions vary (or not)!

Quick Note from Alexa: I’m currently a few chapters behind so I will come back to update this post in a few days with my answers to the questions. Please enjoy Stephanie’s answers though. :)

1.How do you feel about Claire disobeying Jamie and the resulting punishment he brings forth on her for this? Do you feel that Jamie’s punishment was justified by the fact that everyone was put in danger by Claire’s actions? Finally, did Jamie’s vow with Claire’s dagger do anything to sway your thoughts or change your mind on how you initially feel/felt about his punishment?

Alexa:

Stephanie: At first I balked at the punishment. I mean women are fully functional adults who are capable of making decisions as well as mistakes. Then the more i thought about it, the more I realized that it was the culture of the time. Had Jamie not beaten Claire, things would have been very uncomfortable for her. The men would not have forgiven her. Claire at this point is a lot like a child. She doesn’t understand the danger that is surrounding her and the people she travels with. I guess in a way I get it but the woman in me wants to kick Jamie’s ass for it.

2. Just for fun, what was your reaction to the suspicious black spot Claire spotted on the floor near the area where Jamie was sleeping? Did you have any theories to what it might have been before it was revealed to be a _____?

Alexa:

Stephanie: My gut reaction to any black tiny spot is BUG!! I really don’t know why I’m so afraid of them. Generally they mean you no harm. Lol.

3. With regard to the ‘changeling’ baby Claire and Geilie spotted in the wild – if it were you back then and you happened upon a changeling baby in the wild in a circumstance such as this, do you think you’d have reacted most like Claire or Geilie? Explain.

Alexa:

Stephanie: That is a very hard question. I would like to believe that I would have reacted as Claire had. I recently held on to a puppy, literally, until we found it’s owner because I couldn’t just set it back down and hope that it would find it’s way on it’s own without getting hit. A baby is a lot more helpless than a puppy. At the same time, Geilie knows the lands and the ways. She knew that getting involved could come back on them. After all, in the eyes of the parents this is the only way to help their baby. To them, they aren’t abusing their child. Yeah, so I’d like to think I’d be like Claire but I might be more selfish than that.

4. Share your thoughts on Geilie Duncan. Is there anything that surprised you about her story or were you suspicious of her from the beginning?

Alexa:

Stephanie: Geilie did surprise me very much! I couldn’t believe that she was also a traveler. They could have talked about so many things if either had only trusted the other enough! My biggest question is: who was she before she ended up back in time?

5. Your thoughts on Jamie’s LAST REASON for wanting to marry Claire – the one he had been so secretive about. GO!

Alexa:

Stephanie: Typical Jamie. Jamie Fraser can take something so simple and unexplainable and make it the most romantic thing you’ve ever heard…..and then bring in his humor to lighten the mood. I really am excited to continue on with this series. :)
