Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her "power" to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes that the dead leave behind in the world... and the imprints that attach to their killers.

Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find the dead birds her cat had tired of playing with. But now that a serial killer has begun terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he's claimed haunt her daily, she realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.

Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet on her quest to find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved to find herself hoping that Jay's intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she's falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer... and becoming his prey herself.

Since the summary of the book does more than a great job at telling you most of the story I will not further add to the summary like I normally do. So I hope that everyone is ok with a review were I get right to the point of my feelings for the book.

I really did love the characters in this story and I feel they are what is holding the entire story together. Do I feel that Derting had an original idea with a girl who can sense the dead, maybe. The powers are ones that most paranormal romances do not talk about so it was at least a bit original. However, the story does read a little similar to The Touch Series, in my opinion. I know that some people hate it when series get compared with one another but this is just what I thought for most of the time I was reading The Body Finder.

The similarities aside I feel that the best element of the story was the relationship between Jay and Violet. Something about the relationship just felt so real to me personally. It felt like we were finally seeing a couple who could have that strong passion and love each other without it feeling fake. In most stories lately it seems that the girl falls desperately in love with the bad fallen angel, the bad boy werewolf, or the smooth and calculating fairy, without having known the guy for that long. I mean come on people most paranormal romances are series so it proves the point that the characters do not need to fall in love in book one when there are 2-5 other books in the series. I didn’t feel this annoying point in Jay and Violet’s relationship though, which really made me latch on to the idea of the two of them together.

Jay and Violet have been friends for so long that you can already tell that there was at least love in their friendship and it was just as Jay said “waiting around” for the two of them to move into being a couple. I found Jay to be one of the best teen male characters that I have read in a long time, I mean who wouldn’t want a Jay. He is handsome, funny, and you can tell just how much he cares for Violet.

Overall I would say the storyline was good, did it shock me, no. The reader can pretty much tell where the story is going from the very beginning and there are not that many plot twists. I would have liked to see a little bit of a darker side to the story and I would have liked a little more drama towards the end of the book. I feel this book had a rushed ending, the action took all of three pages and then an epilouge was suppose to wrap up the novel very quickly. Like I said I would have liked to see the book a little bit longer in the end so that there could be more mystery or a darker style of writing. What was slightly lacking in the storyline was made up with the awesome real world feeling relationship between Jay and Violet.

Nice review. I definitely didn't have many surprises as I read either, but I still really loved that book. It had the perfect ratio of creepy versus romantic and I loved the relationship between Jay and Violet too. 🙂

Liz- I loved the fact that Violet and Jay were best friends before they decided to turn it into a romantic relationship. It just makes it feel that their love for each other was real.

Sandra- *Spoilers* (just wanna warn anyone) I felt that at times it wasn't creepy enough! I know weird coming from me since I do not like creepy/horror at all. But I was missing a pinch more of a darker side to the killer or maybe an abduction of Violet instead of it getting resolved right away at the school dance.
