High-spirited horse trainer Jessica Stanson stumbles into the perfect job on one of the most elite ranches in Montana. Or at least it would be if her boss, ex-detective Michael Carven, stopped acting like he didn't want her there. Jessica has to prove herself to him on the ranch, and also try to penetrate his armor to get to the man inside. Michael Carven is a man who has left a difficult past behind him, and now works at his dream job raising horses under the Montana sky. But he knows that the past has a way of coming back to him, and soon enough, it does. A wave of violence hits the nearby small town of Riverside, nestled deep in the mountains, as a cunning serial killer preys on the population.

Against his will, Michael finds himself both drawn into the case and coming to care for his independent new trainer. And if having a killer on the loose wasn't enough, his two worlds collide when Jessica becomes the only material witness in the case. Before it is over, Michael and Jessica will put everything they know and hold dear on the line to catch a vicious, cunning killer - and to protect each other as well.

4 Stars

Mike is all set to hand over his ranch to Jess for the next two months, that is until he learns that Jess is short for Jessica. Since he runs a ranch with all male hands he automatically knows that he has to send Jessica packing because she simply isn’t right for the job. Jessica blows Mike over with her knowledge and training with horses and so he decides to let her stay on and run the ranch while he is busy helping solve a murder case. This murder case turns into a serial killer who kills young women and always keeps their panties for a keepsake. It is going to take everything Michael has in order to stop this killer, especially when Jessica becomes his only witness.

This story was good I found it to be a quick read that had me saying oh just one more chapter. I was constantly finding myself sucked into the story because I wanted to see what was going to happen. I really did like both Mike and Jessica, I thought their characters were great, I loved their witty comebacks. I enjoyed the secondary characters as well and how the guys on the ranch like to play practical jokes on one another. During the beginning of the story the murder cases were more of background information and that aspect didn’t start to form until about half way through the book as more and more women end up dead. Mike was once a great detective though until he couldn’t solve his fiance’s murder, because of this he is uptight and unwilling to let Jessica into his personal life. Everything is just business to Mike but he is going to find out that it is perfectly fine to let your heart love again.

Overall I would give this story 4 stars, it was a good quick read with great characters. My only complaint about the story would be that it felt like as soon as we finally had the backstories out of the way and the suspense was picking up the story was over. We had finally fallen into a nice grove in this small town and all of a sudden bam the case is solved and the book is over. I would have enjoyed spending more time with Jess and Mike at the ranch. So I guess all in all when the only complaint is I wanted a longer story you know it is a good book.
