With an enemy hot on his trail and his faithful demon companion determined to remove Olivia from his life, Aeron is trapped between duty and consuming desire. Worse still, a new executioner has been sent to do the job Olivia wouldn't... - via GoodReads
Aeron is part of an unfortunate club known as the Lords of the Underworld. He, along with other warriors like him, took part in a mission long ago to kill Pandora and claim her infamous box. Little did they know what was inside…a demon to posses each warrior and haunt them for eternity. His demon half is wrath, which is a constant struggle to control. But Aeron is beginning to have a positive outlook on his life…of possibly being content with his lot. He has a demon which he considers his adoptive daughter to fill the void in his life for wanting a family and finally has some kind of control over his inner demon. Well, any balance Aeron feels is suddenly turned upside down when he meets Olivia.
Olivia is an angel….well, now a fallen angel. She was given the assignment to execute Aeron, but finds that no matter what the circumstances, she can’t do it. When she fails her duties, she is striped of her wings and runs to the safety of Aeron’s arms.
“I watched you,” she continued, “as well as those around you, and I…ached. I wanted you, and I wanted what they had – freedom and love and fun. I wanted to play. I wanted to kiss and to touch. I wanted joy of my own.” Her gaze met his, bleak, broken. “In the end, I had a choice. Fall…or kill you. I decided to fall. So here I am. Yours.”
Aeron cannot believe Olivia has fallen on his doorstep now that he has finally found some type of peace. His initial reaction is to throw her out of his life forever, but Olivia didn’t become a fallen angel and climb out of the depths of hell just to be cast aside. She’s not giving up Aeron without a fight.
Like the rest of the Lords novels, Aeron and Olivia’s tale is just as wonderful. The stories keep getting better and better as the series develops. It’s the emotional impact that I find so entertaining. In this novel there were many instances which caused me to laugh out loud and near the end I was moved to tears (a few times). That’s the impact Showalter’s writing makes. This isn’t just a story about good vs evil or happily ever after, these stories are about love overcoming the impossible (and I stress the word impossible). Where else can an angel find her demon soul mate?
Gena Showalter has an extraordinary gift for storytelling. Her greatest accomplishment is her character development. Each book has the same general theme, yet is completely different from the last. She sucks you into this vortex of the underworld, shakes you around for a few hundred pages only to leave you gasping for breath, amazed at what you’ve just read. The book is not only hard to put down, but so impossibly fascinating that you never want it to end. The book is dark, it’s funny, it’s suspenseful, it’s romantic and yes, incredibly sexy. It’s everything you could possibly want all rolled into one.
If you love anything paranormal and haven’t read any of Showlater’s work, you have absolute no idea what incredible stories you are missing. The Darkest Passion is book five in the Lords of the Underworld series. I would recommend starting with book number one, The Darkest Night, if you are new to the series. This really isn’t a series that has any stand alone novels, in my opinion, and is best enjoyed if read in order.
